Venture Capital: what it is and what are its advantages

What are the benefits of venture capital? Before answering this question, it is good to briefly go over the history and give a definition. Venture capital as we know it today was born in Silicon Valley, California, and since then has made its substantial contribution to thereal economy and the birth of many iconic and highly successful companies in the world of innovation. We are talking about Google, Facebook and Apple, born as startups and then grown over time thanks to the initial support of venture capital.

Today, on an international level, venture capital is experiencing a unique moment. Even on the Italian market it is increasingly able to attract a greater volume of capital. In 2021, the billion euro invested in Italian startups was exceeded(+191% compared to 2020), setting a new record (Source: Startup Italia).

Many new venture capital funds have appeared on the market, testifying to the interest of large institutional investors in this asset class.

What is venture capital?

A Venture Capital fund is a form of medium-long term investment in unlisted companies with high risk, but also high potential for development and growth: in particular (but not only) in innovative startups and SMEs. The objective of venture capital is to choose companies to be financed, accompanying them in their growth up to the exit by acquisition or through listing on the Stock Exchange.

Although the risks may be high, participating in a venture capital fund means that with a single investment you have access to a portfolio of many companies with high potential, selected by an experienced team and diversified both by type of business and by stage of growth, thus increasing the potential for a positive economic return and significantly reducing the risks.
