Covid has literally made online sales explode, especially those on marketplaces (Amazon, Zalando, eBay, etc.), where 9 out of 10 users are now shopping.
And the brands? Are they ready to sell on these sites?
What is certain is that these platforms are less and less willing to buy from brands and then resell to customers ( wholesale model). The strategy of marketplaces is to push companies to sell directly to the final consumer(Direct-to-Consumer); but 8 out of 10 are not ready.
With the wholesale model, brands used to negotiate with a small number of distributors. They processed few large orders. Now they have to organize themselves to deliver even the smallest of packages. They have to understand the mechanics of each marketplace, decide where to allocate products, deal with shipping and returns, create multi-language digital catalogs, optimize margins, manage tax and accounting issues, and provide customer support, all over the world, every day, 24 hours a day.
