SmartMicroOptics develops and produces mini lenses that can be attached to smartphones and tablets, transforming them into macro cameras or portable digital microscopes, giving anyone immediate and easy access to microscopic photography.

The company is a spin-off of the Italian Institute of Technology, a centre of technological research and international excellence, which has almost 12,000 publications and 600 active patent titles.

The startup has already positioned itself on the market through a successful crowdfunding reward campaign on Kickstarter, which involved - with a single product - over 5 thousand buyers from over 70 countries.

After this success, SMO focused on research and development activities to offer a wider range of products. Today it offers four different types of lenses, less than 1 mm thick and cheaper than any other alternative available on the market, which allow 5x and 10x magnification (for observations on small objects or precision work such as self-testing moles) and 3.5 and 4.5 micron detection (for microscopic experiences).

The company holds an exclusive license to exploit intellectual property and three international patent applications.

In 2019, it will launch its fifth product, Diple, with unprecedented technical features in terms of magnification capacity, portability and price that will enable magnifications of around 1000x and can also be used for the analysis of red blood cells and bacteria.
